France's debt came from wars with England (both the Seven Years War and the American Revolution). France also had an inefficient/corrupt taxation system which put an unfair burden on the middle and lower classes. Scheming by the nobility and corruption cost the country millions, so more taxes were needed. Add in a bit of famine causing food prices to soar and the lower classes couldn't afford to eat. A hungry populace is an angry populace, so revolution.

Please note this is a very simplified version.
