How can I challenge the collections on the debt on an apartment lease?

A couple years back I had a roommate in an apartment who broke the lease on me an left me holding the bag so to speak. I am disabled and was unable to pay the full rent so I was forced to move out. It has shown up on my credit report and is interfering with my finding a place for when I move later this year. How can I challenge this debt, seeing as I had the intention to fulfill the lease agreement?

Unfortunately the person that had left you holding the bag can be sued by you in court.

Not only can you sue for the money, you also can now sue for damages.

However the damages will most likely be dismissed as you had time to get a new roommate.

Always remember talking to the managers in this situation would be better than not talking to them and be stuck with what you have now.

You can write to all three credit companies and explain that you indeed have your amount of rent and someone had skipped. They must add this to the credit report that it is being reported by you.

Best of luck. Please see an attorney. You can get legal help at no cost to you. Legal aid.
